Longevity (Ayurdaya) Calculator
A free reference tool that shows how the classical Vedic texts sort a birth chart into one of three life-span categories, with the derivation laid out step by step โ not a prediction.
Ayurdaya (ayus = life-span) is the classical Vedic framework for reasoning about longevity from a birth chart. It is not one formula but a family of methods, and the texts โ Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra chief among them โ set out several. Kundli Studio presents one of them as a scholarly reference tool: the three-pair classification of Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 43, which sorts a chart into a short, middle or full life-span category from the signs of six chart points and shows how it got there. It computes that classical rule for an astrologer to study; it does not issue a verdict about any person, and it shows no age or count of years.
Classical authors group life-span into three broad bands โ alpayu (short), madhyayu (middle) and purnayu (full) โ and describe further rules that refine them. The tradition also describes the Pindayu, Nisargayu and Amsayu methods, which work from year-values; they are explained below as classical background and are not computed here. Longevity in the tradition is read together with the eighth (Randhra) house and other factors, and this calculator keeps to the one classification it can derive from the chart in front of it โ always as workings for an astrologer to weigh, never as a forecast.
What the texts describe, and what is computed here
Classical texts describe more than one way to reason about an ayus estimate. The first three rows are the year-value methods, described for study and not computed here; the last row is the classification this calculator computes from the chart, with every step shown.
| # | Method | How the texts describe it |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Pindayu | Sums the year-contributions assigned to each planet, scaled by its strength between exaltation and debilitation (a rule-of-three from the deep exaltation point). Described, not computed here. |
| 2 | Nisargayu | Starts from the fixed natural year-values the texts allot to each planet, then applies the same strength-based reductions. Described, not computed here. |
| 3 | Amsayu | Derives each contribution from the navamsa (amsa) position, with the classical exaltation and placement corrections applied. Described, not computed here. |
| 4 | Three-pair classification | Reads the sign type (movable, fixed or dual) of the lagna lord and the 8th lord, of Saturn and the Moon, and of the lagna and the Hora Lagna, then combines the three pairs by the rule in the text. Computed here, with every step shown. |
| What this calculator computes | the three-pair classification, with its derivation | |
Per Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, the choice among the three year-value methods depends on whether the Lagna, the Sun or the Moon is strongest, and the texts add rules by which Jupiter and Saturn can raise or lower a class. This calculator applies none of those year-value rules; the classification above is the one rule it computes, taken from chapter 43 of the same text. Everything here is a working for an astrologer to weigh โ never a forecast of anyone's life-span.
The three-pair classification
The rule of Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra applied to the chart: the lagna lord and 8th lord, Saturn and the Moon, and the lagna and Hora Lagna, each pair read by the sign type of its two signs.
The derivation, step by step
Each pair's two signs, their sign types and the category the pair gives are laid out, followed by the rule that combines the three pairs, so every step of the working can be checked.
Shown only when you choose
Nothing about a life-span category appears until you choose to see it, and the page shows no age and no count of years โ only the classical computation and the names of related yogas.
Common questions
What is Ayurdaya?
Ayurdaya (from ayus, life-span) is the classical Vedic framework for reasoning about longevity from a birth chart. The texts describe several methods and rules for choosing between them; this calculator computes one of them as a reference for astrologers to study, not as a verdict.
What are Pindayu, Nisargayu and Amsayu?
They are the three principal year-value methods of the classical texts. Pindayu works from planetary year-contributions scaled by strength, Nisargayu from the fixed natural year-values, and Amsayu from navamsa positions. They are described here as classical background; this calculator does not compute them.
Which house shows longevity in the classical method?
The texts read longevity chiefly from the eighth (Randhra) house and its lord, alongside the Lagna and planets such as Saturn. The three-pair classification uses the lord of the eighth house with the lagna lord, Saturn, the Moon, the lagna and the Hora Lagna, so the workings can be examined in context.
Does this calculator predict how long someone will live?
No. It presents one classical computation โ the three-pair classification into the traditional short, middle and full bands โ for astrologer reference only. It shows how the text derives that category; it does not forecast a lifespan, an age, or any timing, and it shows no count of years.
